Melcina Irvine
b. 10/30/1818 - m. G.P. O'Neal (or O'Neill)

MELCINA IRVINEp, 8th child of Thomas and Tabitha, Mt. Vernon born on 30th Oct., 1818. Nothing has come to light save this bit from I. T. H. Melcina married G. P. O’Neal (or O’Neill), who came from Ireland as a boy and was possess of an irritable disposition, was quarrelsome and short tempered. He studied law at Kenyon College, wore a queue and was thoroughly improvident. Deserted his wife and 5 children when he returned to Ireland. The children were parceled out to the in-laws. On maturing some of them moved to Chicago and were victims of the Great Chicago Fire, and were aided by their uncles and aunts.

(Involvement of "some of them in Chicago Fire" is similar to the tales told by Dr. Elizabeth Reed aren't "some of the children" of Jefferson Jay. It would seem more probable to have been these O’Neal offshoots for the obituary writer of Jefferson Jay spotted the children in spec-towns. But – who knows? It’s possible "some" of each group were victims of Mrs. O’Leary’s cow.)
